My first day with my own hat on for a while and in London for Media 140. There are lots of twittery people here &#8211; and they will be blogging more than me. But the back channel will be interesting…

Not so much breaking news, but spraining it &#8211; here is my blurb on last week’s excellent NFPtwteetup.

<p><span class="drop">N</span>ot so much breaking news, but spraining it &#8211; here is my blurb on last week’s <a title="NFPTweetup" href="http://nfptweetup.pbworks.com/25+February+2009+-+2nd+event">excellent NFPtwteetup</a>.</p>
<p>Organiser <a title="Rachel beer" href="http://twitter.com/rachelbeer">Rachel Beer</a>, and <a title="JustGiving" href="http://www.justgiving.com/">Justgiving</a>’s (lovely sponsors of the evening) <a title="Jon Waddingham" href="http://twitter.com/jon_bedford">Jonathan Waddingham</a>, brought together about 60 non-profit types to Christian Aid’s HQ in London for a couple of hours of chat about <a href="http://twitter.com">Twitter</a> and all manner of social media tools. We were also lucky enough to be able to boadcast live on Christian Aid&#8217;s internet radio station which I found myself presenting for a couple of hours(!). And very enjoyable it was too, once the inital shock had worn off. The collaborative slideshow that was created for the day is below.</p>
<div id="__ss_1072109" style="width: 425px; text-align: left;"><a style="font:14px Helvetica,Arial,Sans-serif;display:block;margin:12px 0 3px 0;text-decoration:underline;" title="NFPtweetup Feb09 Slideshow" href="http://www.slideshare.net/rachelbeer/nfptweetup-feb09-slideshow">NFPtweetup Feb09 Slideshow</a><object style="margin:0px" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="425" height="355" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://static.slidesharecdn.com/swf/ssplayer2.swf?doc=nfptweetupfeb09slideshow-090226043206-phpapp01&amp;stripped_title=nfptweetup-feb09-slideshow" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed style="margin:0px" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="355" src="http://static.slidesharecdn.com/swf/ssplayer2.swf?doc=nfptweetupfeb09slideshow-090226043206-phpapp01&amp;stripped_title=nfptweetup-feb09-slideshow" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
<div style="font-size: 11px; font-family: tahoma,arial; height: 26px; padding-top: 2px;">View more <a style="text-decoration:underline;" href="http://www.slideshare.net/">presentations</a> from <a style="text-decoration:underline;" href="http://www.slideshare.net/rachelbeer">Rachel Beer</a>.</div>
<p>Then followed plenty of chat focusing on the the following areas</p>
<ol>
<li>Tools</li>
<li>Usage</li>
<li>Fundraising</li>
<li>Integration</li>
<li>Reputation &amp; Policy</li>
</ol>
<p>I say plenty of chat because together with the great venue, we were allowed to hijack Christain Aid’s internet radio stream and broadcast (as much as the technology let us) live for most of the evening bringing a whole new element to the event, especially those who couldn’t phyiscally be there. I was trusted with the microphone for the duration and I’m grateful that lots of twitterers also are great witterers in real life.  So without exception, thanks to everyone who gamely chatted away when I stuck a mic in their face, I hope we managed to get across a flavour of what was going on (there were a couple of <a href="http://twitter.com/davidgripenstam/statuses/1253426175" target="_blank">very nice</a> <a href="http://twitter.com/b33god/statuses/1250554313" target="_blank">tweets</a> about our efforts!).</p>
<p><strong>Perfect match</strong></p>
<p>Hopefully next time we can do the same and with a little bit more preparation we can integrate more of the online twittering (ably monitored by <a href="http://twitter.com/amrsward" target="_blank">Amy Sample Ward</a>) and the radio side because I really think radio and twitter are a perfect match for each other. (A podcast of the evening should be available soon)</p>
<p>So your task if you have any interest in charities and social media is to <a href="https://nfptweetup.pbwiki.com/25+February+2009+-+2nd+event" target="_blank">catch up on the learnings</a> from the evening and sign up to the <a href="https://nfptweetup.pbwiki.com/" target="_blank">wiki or mailing list</a> for details of the next NFPtweetup (probably taking place in May).</p>

<p>And it’s all right to look through the presentation at work too because it’s part of the materials for his <a href="http://onlinejournalismblog.com/tag/classes/">online journalism course</a> (he’s a proper <a href="http://www.mediacourses.com/staff_teaching.asp">lecturer and everything</a> at <a href="http://www.bcu.ac.uk/">Birmingham City University</a>) So really you’re expanding your skillset, or training…or something.</p>
<p>PS. I’m not the only one who think’s it a good preso &#8211; it was Slideshare’s top Presentation of the Day yesterday</p>
